Satisfying your own desire ultimately comes down to helping others reach their goals.
“Give, and it will be given to you. They will *pour into your lap a good measure—pressed down, shaken together and running over. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return.” Luke 6:38
The ‘golden rule’ preached by Jesus is commonly known as “do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Right? So, what is the ‘platinum rule?’
Well, what if the other person isn’t interested in what would make you happy? Doing what you like for them might be a complete waste of time. How are you going to find out about how to treat them?
Whose goals govern your actions?
When you decide what you want – what your goal is – your next step is to find out who you can help in reaching their goals. Their goals might compliment your goals or they might not do a thing for your goals. All that matters is that you selflessly grasp the eternal principle that is built by design into this universe: the key to accomplishing your desire is to find others to help in reaching their desires.
Remember the universal law of sowing and reaping?
“Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap.” Galatians 6:7
Imagine sowing helpful and empowering insights and strengths into the lives of others without primarily thinking, “What’s in it for me?” Yes, I know, we are all wired to think about ourselves all the time. Just watch a child for awhile. Listen to ‘em whine about getting their way. How many full-grown adults live in a constant state of thinking about themselves, about their needs, their worries, their priorities… without much thought about others at all?
“Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.” Phil. 2:4
Imagine how refreshing it would be to be surrounded by people who really think like that and actually live that way.
How would you like to work for a company where that is the resounding mission that resonates from every coworker? How would you like to have a church family where that is the conviction of every leader and every parishioner? How would you like a community where that is the code of ethics practiced by all your neighbors? How would you like a family where that is the lifestyle from morning until bedtime? How would you like to be the embodiment of that concept and participate in a complete reformation of your culture? Imagine… thoughtfully and intentionally helping people reach their goals. What a relationship-building concept. And it all starts with you. Could this be hidden in the Bible for those who pursue the righteous path of the LORD’s “chosen fast?”
“And the LORD will continually guide you, and satisfy your desire in scorched places, and give strength to your bones; and you will be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water whose waters do not fail.” Isa 58:11
Sounds like a pretty good result doesn’t it? Who wouldn’t want that for themselves? So, how does this manifest? Check out the verse immediately preceding that promise. Like most promises from God, there is a condition… it starts with the little word “if.”
“And if you give yourself to the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then your light will rise in darkness and your gloom will become like midday.” Isa. 58:10
But a charitable attitude is something you can have toward not only destitute people. Why not have that attitude toward those we interact with on a daily basis?
“So then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual up building. (οἰκοδομή oikodomḗ – edification – the act of one who promotes another’s growth in Christian wisdom, piety, happiness, holiness )” Romans 14:19
Sowing and reaping
Sowing and reaping… It’s as obvious as any law of nature that serves to guide our own actions in almost every area of life we can think about. As we sow, so then shall we also reap. That’s something you can truly have faith in because the Creator built it into the fabric of our experience. It’s an unchangeable law… decreed in heaven. It guarantees that for every deliberate human effort …we will receive a multiple reward. For each handful of seeds planted, a bushel is reaped. For every good idea shared with another, many more ideas will be given to us in return. For every loving act of helpfulness, a life of love is harvested in return, and that translates into a life that’s full of positive legacy.
Giving to the poor has certain results.
“You shall generously give to him (the poor), and your heart shall not be grieved when you give to him, because for this thing the LORD your God will bless you in all your work and in all your undertakings.” Deut 15:10
Have you seen God’s promises to bless the “work of your hands?”
The work of your hands is the substance from which the Lord generates his blessing of increase. And it’s not just about what you produce mechanically with your manual labor. It is the promise for your productivity, your creativity, your profitability, your increase in wealth, your increase in the ability to provide for your needs and the needs of others.
“The LORD will command the blessing upon you in your barns and in all that you put your hand to, and He will bless you in the land which the LORD your God gives you.” Deut 28:8
The outcome of tending to YOUR business?
“…make it your ambition to lead a quiet life and attend to your own business and work with your hands, just as we commanded you, so that you will behave properly toward outsiders and not be in any need.” 1 Thes 4:11-12
“In all labor there is profit, But mere talk leads only to poverty.” Proverbs 14:23
We all face a major challenge today.
Will we commit our ambition to grow up and stand up to learn how to positively overcome the challenges of a changing world or will we allow ourselves to be beaten and depressed into a state of complaining and bitterness as a victim of circumstances?
I’m learning daily to conscientiously and outwardly show more interest in others by engaging them in questions about their situations and their goals. I’m finding that people have allowed the cares of this world to overwhelm their sense of hope and faith and the ability to care about the needs of others. And if I can show true interest in them, perhaps it will lead them to search for the answers they really want so they can make a difference in their lives.
Communication is about relating at a deep level
You’ve probably heard it said that “people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”
Have you noticed how commonly people want to gripe about all the things that are wrong with their lives? Why not ask them – sincerely – “So, what are you doing about it?” That shows genuine interest in them. They see that you are engaging them to think and maybe even search for answers. You could continue: “If you found someone with a solution to that problem, would you be open to explore it?”
And whether you’re talking to a believer or a pagan, whether you’re talking about health or money or relationships or beliefs, don’t you think he would be more inclined to dialog with you if he senses that you are authentically listening to him and engaging with him at the heart level?
Why not ask people about their family, their work, their situation in life, their dreams and their goals. Don’t just ask “how’s it going?” Ask them how the economy is treating them. Ask them what they are doing to change their situation. Let them know you’ll help them with some ideas or suggestions when you find something that might be appropriate for them in their need.
Everybody needs success in their life but not everybody is willing to do what it takes to reach it.
There are four basic principles that you can help your kids and others to make a part of their daily lives.
- Decide what you really want.
- What will you give up to get it?
- Associate with people who will help you achieve your goals.
- Find a proven plan that works and work with your plan.
Let’s focus on these priorities a minute. If you don’t have it clear in your mind what your daily actions are determined to produce you are destined to live in mediocrity and confusion. So, why not decide today to change that?
What is the catalyst for you to produce perseverance?
I think many of us in adulthood have lost the excitement of living because we’ve given up on our dreams… even our sanctified dreams. Why not rekindle them? As a believer in Jesus your Messiah and LORD, if you discover the transforming revelation of Ephesians 2:10, it will transform your future.
“…we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” Ephesians 2:10
Put that together with Psalm 37:4.
“Delight yourself also in the LORD, and He shall give you the desires of your heart.”
And if you want to be a positive influence on others, why not ask them what they would really like to do if they had the time, money and resources to do it? The first step is helping them know they are one of God’s unique creations. Next is to help them discover that as they surrender to Jesus, He can and will change their outlook on what He wants to do with their life.
Wouldn’t you like to have the ability to give people a renewed vision to achieve what they really want in life? Maybe you need to be more specific about what you really want and write it down. That will be at least a catalyst for you to produce perseverance. And perseverance is one of the key factors that proves your character. Do you think that might be why God wants us to do whatever we do with ALL our hearts? Those with heart to persevere are those who know what they want and constantly work to achieve it.
Guard your time like it’s a VAULT filled with treasure
Secondly, as life beyond childhood gets increasingly cluttered with habits and the demands of others, we have to make better choices in the use of our only true wealth. What are you doing with your time? If you want the harvest, you need to plant the seed. Be sure you’re not planting wild oats by letting activities fill your days with things that don’t support your goals and truest dreams and desires.
King Solomon wrote: “He who walks with wise men becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm” (Proverbs 13:20). We become like those we spend our time with. Why else does a wise parent guide his child to choose his friends wisely? When we surround ourselves with mentors and coaches who care enough about us to keep us on track with loving correction, we stay focused, energized and excited. The beliefs of others close to us shape our own beliefs. Their courage, tenacity and optimism infect us to be relentless.
When you ask someone if they are getting the results they want in any area of their life, the next question is “what are you doing to make a difference?” Once you have a proven plan to accomplish your desired result the question is simply “are you willing to work at your plan?” If you don’t have the plan yet you need to be daily investing some of your time asking others for a possible roadmap to your destination. Once you find it, invest your wholehearted effort into working your plan and working with others to help them in their process.
Our attitude is the rudder that guides our life’s journey. It guides our ability to overcome challenges. It helps us through crisis. The mind governs the course of life. So, the mind controlled by the flesh (i.e. carnal nature) leads to death, while the mind governed by the (Holy) Spirit (of God), leads to life and peace (Romans 8). This is why we must consciously ‘renew our minds’ with the principles of God’s wisdom found in his Word. It’s like a lamp to your pathway (Psalm 119:105).
If we are willing to grow, willing to adjust, willing to think, and willing to reason with our Creator, He clearly gives us reason to have hope. Without Him, the circumstances of life in this world can overcome us with an attitude of hopelessness. Scripture is full of promises for us to grow, to succeed, to prosper, and to find blessing and joy while we are here. Challenges and problems need to be honestly perceived as opportunities for us to prayerfully search for ways to make a difference. Have you heard that necessity is the mother of invention? There’s nothing like a puzzling predicament to get us to start asking for help in finding a solution, right?
So, what’s your attitude? Are you willing to change?
By your attitude, you decide to read, or not to read. Let me recommend a book worth reading if you want to discover the time-honored principles of success. Jack Canfield (author of Chicken Soup for the Soul) and his team produced an epic called “The Success Principles.” It’s truly the best guidance system I’ve read to compliment the Bible in showing how to get from where you are to where you want to be. You’ll be equipped for life-changing new horizons when you let these timeless principles empower you to become a transformed person.
By your attitude, you decide to try or give up. You’ll either take this challenge to change your behavior or you’ll write it off and reason that you’re going to remain stalled on mediocre.
By your attitude, you will either blame yourself for your failure, or you’ll blame others. Our attitude determines whether we tell the truth or lie, act or procrastinate, advance or recede. And by your own attitude you… and you alone… will actually decide whether to succeed or fail.
Did you ever stop to think how incredibly awesome it is that the God who created the complex and immense universe would create mankind and give to humans the freedom to choose. That choice will permit us to select our own achievement or our own destruction?
Think about it. God in His infinite wisdom created an amazingly complex and productive world. But he deliberately gave humans the creative ability to develop His earth. Strange as it seems, God decided to partner with man to let us use our divinely brilliant gifts to invent and create endless enhancements for the benefit of other people! Across the rivers and streams he built no bridges. He left the pictures unpainted, the songs unsung, the books unwritten, and frontiers unexplored. For the accomplishment of those things, God created the amazingly creative human who, within his heart and mind, had the capacity to do all these things and more, depending on his own choices.
Your attitude determines what you will choose… and your choices determine your results. What an incredible gift… so much opportunity.

Joshua 24:15 “choose you this day whom ye will serve”
Deuteronomy 30:19 “I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore, choose life, that you and your offspring may live.”
All that we can accomplish and become has indeed been left to us. For as long as you continue to draw breath, you have the choice to complete the work in the earth that God has begun for you. In all the seasons of our lives, attitude is everything!
So… don’t forget the platinum rule.
Show genuine interest in others. It’s the key to getting everything you really want in life. Learn to ask questions that show your sincere interest in the person you’re getting to know. You have two ears and one mouth. So, work harder at trying to listen twice as much as you talk. That’s going to be a challenge for a lot of us… but work at it. People will love you for it. And that’s not all they will do. Remember Zig Ziglar? He was one of the most respected Christian businessmen of the last generation who has left a legacy that will continue to empower millions more people who heard him.
Zig Ziglar quotes:
“You can get everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want.”
“Desire is the ingredient that changes the hot water of mediocrity to the steam of outstanding success.”
“If you go looking for a friend, you’re going to find they’re very scarce. If you go out to be a friend, you’ll find them everywhere.”
“What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals.”
Whatever you do, scripture prompts us to do your work with all your heart and to do it with the desire to please your Lord and not just please yourself. People who truly understand God’s purpose for their lives know that we are called to be intimately involved with one another.
“Let them shout for joy and be glad, who favor my righteous cause; And let them say continually, ‘Let the LORD be magnified, Who has pleasure in the prosperity of His servant.’” Psalms 35:27
What is the path to reaching your most cherished desires of your life?
“Delight yourself in the LORD, and He will give you the desires of your heart.” Psalm 37:4
Where do you think those deep-seated desires originated?
Desire = “of the father”
For the one who is intent on living in a state of delight in his Lord, what a thrilling discovery it is to find that the Lord is our Heavenly Father who created us for His good works and He has birthed in us the ability to have a vision and a desire for the things that He is pleased to give us.
“The LORD gives grace and glory; No good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly.” Ps 84:11
And the Bible is full of the insights and discernment needed to “walk uprightly.”
“The generous man will be prosperous, and he who waters will himself be watered. He who withholds grain, the people will curse him, but blessing will be on the head of him who sells it.” Proverbs 11:25-26
In today’s economic turmoil, we will be wise to learn from the Bible. There is blessing in cultivating whatever opportunities the Lord puts in your hands and selling the product of your work. Learn what it takes to bring value to the market with your knowledge and skills. Learn how to engage those who want what you have to sell.
Learn how to find those who you want to do business with. But most of all, learn to help others get what they truly want… and in the process, you will find your life to be fulfilled with the joy of fulfilling the PLATINUM RULE.
When our ambition to improve ourselves is rooted in the truth that our Creator is actually the fountainhead of that ambition, then we can have the righteous faith to believe that He is at work in us, both to will and to do of His good pleasure, just like He tells us in Philippians 2:13. That’s why we’re told in that passage that our job is to work out our salvation with deep reverence and trembling awe… while He does His unique work in each of us to accomplish His will through us.
As you increase in your sensitivity to asking people to express their dreams and desires to you, work at sincerely letting them know that you’ll do what you can to help them discover the solutions to help them achieve those desires.
