The Bible teaches followers of Jesus Christ to ask God for wisdom when you realize that you lack it, and trust that He will give it to you. How do you think that wisdom is found? Can we really believe that there is practical wisdom available for the way forward from where we are right now? When the seemingly overwhelming crises of the world are swirling around us, how can we find a well-lighted path into some sort of sustainable future that we all want?
Joshua chapter one sets the stage after 40 years in the wilderness, facing one of the most challenging times of change that any people has ever faced. They were facing constant conflict and stress. In Joshua 24 Joshua summarizes that “we will serve the Lord.”
At the start of the years-long project to conquer the Promised Land God says in Joshua 1:8:
“This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success.”
If we are honest, we all want success. When discouragement is all around us, God promised Joshua success when he kept his eyes on God and His Word. Could it be that God’s wisdom for those who are asking for it can come from a message like this that is delivered in a timely season?
Tom Morris put together a list of seven conditions for success that are strikingly universal and basic to practically any situation. These keys serve to lay a foundation for the most deeply satisfying and sustainable successes in life. We should apply them to every challenge, opportunity, endeavor, or relationship.
The 7 Cs of Success
(1) A clear CONCEPTION of what we want, a vivid vision, a goal clearly imagined.
(2) A strong CONFIDENCE that we can attain that goal.
(3) A focused CONCENTRATION on what it takes to reach the goal.
(4) A stubborn CONSISTENCY in pursuing our vision.
(5) An emotional COMMITMENT to the importance of what we’re doing.
(6) A good CHARACTER to guide us and keep us on a proper course.
(7) A CAPACITY TO ENJOY the process along the way.
There are, no doubt, other key concepts associated with success, but they can almost all be listed as components of one or more of these 7. These 7 Cs give us a logical and comprehensive framework for success.
Let’s take a moment to look at each concept. Start with our basic need to identify a goal or set of goals. What are the applications for each of the seven keys?
1 – A clear CONCEPTION of what we want, a vivid vision, a goal clearly imagined
No matter where we live or what we do or who we are… every facet of our lives that anticipates successful achievement of something needs us to think as clearly as possible what we want to accomplish and what we’d like to see happen.
It’s not enough to say “I want a job.” We must target what kind of job and where we want to work.
I’m reminded of the advice given to Alice in Wonderland (by the Cheshire cat – wasn’t it?). If you don’t know where you’re going it doesn’t matter which way you go. You’ll surely get there. But it may not be where you’d like to get.
True success starts with an inner vision. Sure, it’s incomplete at first. But the vision for your goal will grow once you define it. Just as Adam was given a defined goal to care for and develop the Garden of Eden, our world (as we find it) is just the raw material for what we can make of it. God created us to use our creative energies to bring unique expression to the world He made. It’s part of the condition of man to be made in the “image” of God – to be creative. It’s part of His nature and our nature to be creative, artistic and expressive. When we have clear goals in our minds and express them with our words and actions (like writing them down) then we start to develop structure for our actions.
So what do you want? Get creative and think about where you want to go and what you want to be.
Did you know that if you choose to delight yourself in your Creator, He expressly promises to actually GIVE you the desires of your heart? That’s in Psalm 37.
“Delight yourself in the LORD; And He will give you the desires of your heart.”
Is it possible that if we make a habit of pleasing and worshipping Him, He actually arranges things for us to think about goals and desires that originate from the heart of God Himself? Isn’t it interesting to know the origin of the word “desire”? Think of it. “Sire” means “to father.” “De” means “of”… so “Desire” means “of the Father.” Could it be that our ability for creative expression — in dreaming about and planning goals — is a direct reflection of being created in the image of God? If you are delighting yourself in the Lord He is promising to impart those heart desires and help you see them fulfilled.

2 – A strong CONFIDENCE that we can attain the goal
Jesus tells us in Luke 12:6-7 that “you are of more value than many sparrows.”
If confidence is in any way related to faith, then how do we develop stronger confidence… stronger faith? The Bible says that faith comes by hearing the word. Let’s face it, the more we listen to and think about whatever we choose, the more knowledge about it we gain and the more confidence or faith we have in those words and concepts. What’s our inside attitude? It is absolutely the foundational key to outside results.
Are you launching a new enterprise? Do you desire to seek a new direction? You need upfront faith in what you’re doing. Do whatever it takes to learn about your goal to have the faith, the confidence and the reassurance that you will arrive at your desired destination. If we lack experience we may have to work hard to generate a confident attitude. Is it worth it? You bet it is. Get the coaching and the education with someone who has been there before you. In the process, you will raise your prospects for success. If you want confidence … then develop competence. Let your natural curiosity urge you to dig deep in your study of the things that will help you achieve success in reaching your goal. Will this guarantee success? No… but your faith will compel you to take the risk anyway. And what if you fail? You’re just one step closer to success. You must fail. It’s part of the pathway to success. You will learn much and become stronger in the process.
3 – A focused CONCENTRATION on what it takes to reach the goal
The Bible tells us to do whatever we do with all our heart as a direct service to God and not just ourselves or other people. Aim to please God no matter what you do… it’s the best thing you can do to assure success in reaching your goal. Concentrate on your goal with focus. When children are raised to succeed at little goals and then expand to bigger goals, they will be prepared to dream about even bigger goals as they grow up. It’s important to understand that big dreams can lead to big disappointments if we don’t learn how to chart our way forward.
If we concentrate on the “what it takes” part of our vision, then our success at anything challenging will come from planning our path and then putting that plan into action.
It’s a well known Biblical principle that what you concentrate on (what you think about continually) is what you tend to become. “As a man thinks, so is he.” If you concentrate your thought and devote a lot of your energy into a new direction, two things will happen. Your goal will become clearer and your mind will find new pathways of seeing things that you might have missed before.
New ideas and insights will come to your mind. Providence has a way of guiding you to discover things you never noticed before and that relate to the goal you’ve set. Focused concentration allows you to develop plans naturally. Then you can act and adjust along the way. Even a flawed plan can get you started and lead you to where you can discover a better plan.
4 – A stubborn CONSISTENCY in pursuing our vision
I discovered that the word consistency comes from two Greek roots — a verb meaning “to stand” and a particle meaning “together.” Consistency is all about standing together.
Now just think about it. Ask yourself: “Do my actions stand together with my words?”
Go deeper. Ask: “Do my reactions and emotions stand together with my deepest beliefs and values?” This should cause some determination to rise up within our soul. If it doesn’t then your heart isn’t in your vision in the first place.
But then the challenge gets a little harder. Ask, “Do the people I work with stand together?” You may have to deliberately find new associations who support the vision you’re pursuing. If you want success, it’s important to hang around people who are supportive to your success. This is what consistency is all about. It’s a matter of unifying your energy and efforts in a single direction. Inconsistency defuses power. Consistency moves us toward our goals.
5 – An emotional COMMITMENT to the importance of what we’re doing
Ever think about the difference between “interested” and “committed?” Who would you rather have on your team? Why should anyone bother pursuing something of value without commitment to the pursuit? Passion is the core of extraordinary success. It’s a key to overcoming difficulties, seizing opportunities, and getting other people excited about your projects.
6 – A good CHARACTER to guide us and keep us on a proper course
Character inspires trust. Nothing is more attractive to other people than trustworthiness, especially in a world where there is so much mistrust and suspicion. And trust is necessary for people to work together well. Good character is required for great collaboration. Today’s world shows us that innovative partnerships are key to successful achievements. Collaboration and synergy are the new ‘currency’ of great accomplishments. Excellence in moral character is foundational for working well together more than ever before.
And good character does a lot more than just promote trust. It truly has an effect on each person’s own inner sense of freedom and insight. Bad character not only corrupts, it blinds. A person whose perspective has been deeply skewed by selfishness or dishonesty cannot understand what’s true as perceptively as someone whose sensibilities are ethical and full of positive moral character. Good character makes sustainable success more likely.
7 – A CAPACITY TO ENJOY the process along the way
I’ve found that if we don’t enjoy the journey we probably can’t fully appreciate the destination. The more you can enjoy the process of what you’re doing, the more likely you’ll have better results in the end. It’s easier to set creative goals when you truly enjoy the process of your everyday activities toward those goals. Confidence will come more naturally. Your concentration can seem effortless. Consistency will not be a battle. The emotional commitment will flow. And issues of character will not be as difficult to manage. A capacity to enjoy the process is inseparably part of every other factor of success.
These conditions of success are all intimately connected. They make up a fittingly designed framework that allows us to discover the most fulfilling forms of achievement in everything we do. They will help us to leave a legacy for the next generation that will truly be honored. They will energize and direct us to worthy accomplishments with a satisfaction that can be best characterized by the approval of our Maker when He tells us, “well done faithful servant.”
Why should we ever settle for anything less?
I heard about how Jim Rohn, the well-known business trainer, taught about a very simple yet powerful concept – the ant philosophy.
The Bible teaches the wisdom of observing the humble ant and learning her ways. Maybe we should all talk with each other from time to time about the characteristics of ants that should apply to our own lives as humans.
Do we value success? Survival? Community? Progress? Accomplishment? Overcoming obstacles? Endurance? Resourcefulness?
What other values can you think of and why everybody should study ants?
Consider the simplicity of Four Basic Principles seen in the behavior of ants.
Principle Number One: ants never quit.
Can you think of some advantages of this kind of attitude?
If ants are going somewhere and you try to stop them; they’ll find another way, won’t they? Working together or all alone, have you noticed that ants are determined to do whatever it takes to get where they want to go? They’ll climb over, they’ll climb under, and they’ll climb around. Nothing seems to stand in their way of finding the solution to every barricade you can throw at them. They will find another way. Count on it.
Not a bad core value if you’re an ant or a person with a passion for living… is it? Do you reckon this kind of persistence is worth brushing off and determining for yourself? Never quit looking for a way to get where you’re supposed to go.
Principle Number Two: ants think winter all summer.
Now here’s a pretty energizing perspective.
You can’t be so naive to think summer will last forever.
Comfortable climate is no time to relax. You know winter is coming. The question is, “are you committed to do what it takes?” Are you committed to the discipline of preparation? Working hard in the summers of life will keep you from starving in the slow going winters when resources are sparse and conditions are more challenging.
Resist the temptation to join the partiers in their carefree summer flings. Take some time for refreshment and pleasure but be careful not to overdo it. Summer is no time to kick back. The ants are showing us the way if we’ll only pay attention.
Be reminded that summertime can fool you. If you’re not thinking ahead you’ll forget that “this doesn’t last.” Be careful where and how you build your house, your business or your project in the summer when life is going fine. Think how the landscape around you will look when the storms are upon you. Be realistic. In the summer, you’ve got to think storm. You’ve got to think rocks as you enjoy the sand and sun. Think ahead.
Principle Number Three: ants think summer all winter.
That too is so important.
During the winter, when it’s cold and windy and wet, when you can hardly leave your cozy corner, you’ve got to remind yourself, “This won’t last long; we’ll soon be out of here.” Do you think this attitude just might keep us hopeful?
And look what happens when the storm and cold lifts. When things start warming up on an early day in springtime, the ants are out. If it turns cold again, they’ll dive back down,
but then they come out as soon as the sun rises on a nice warm new day. They can’t wait to get out.
And here’s the last part of the ant philosophy:
Principle Number Four – the “all-you-possibly-can” philosophy.
— How much will an ant gather during the summer to prepare for the winter?
All he possibly can. What a wonderfully ambitious perspective,
the “all-you-possibly-can” philosophy.
Can you seriously take that mindset and make it your own?
In just about anything you undertake, why not have the attitude that you’re going to DO all you possibly can, ACCOMPLISH all you possibly can, PRODUCE all you possibly can, EARN all you possibly can, SELL all you possibly can, INFLUENCE all you possibly can… in short… whatever opportunities life hands you you’re going to do like scripture says and make the most of every opportunity because the daylight is briefer than you think. Before you know it, the night time comes when you can’t do much work.
Wow, maybe that is the makings for a great seminar to put on and invite everyone to attend – the ant seminar. Think of it: Never give up; Look ahead; Stay positive and Do all you can.
Did you notice how suddenly our lives can take a different direction?
It was a life changing discovery for me to realize that the purposes, directions and specialized career focuses of our lives are subject to change as we interact with people and circumstances that providentially come into our experience.
Now don’t miss this.
Since “change” in our world is so inevitable and adjusting ourselves to change is so challenging, could it be that the realization of your own dreams will be accomplished when you make it your goal to help some other people reach for their own dreams? Why not discover the tools, the systems and the methods that can help you to help those you’re privileged to team up with?
Can you believe that there are people willing to be helped? Can you believe that there are others who have the solutions and the systems to help you if you’re willing to open a new chapter of your life and see what you didn’t see before?
For some who hear me, this is just a generality… but for others it will lead to a specific and providential turning point. Only those who are willing to test it will discover it for themselves.
Well, what if I told you that there are better solutions than you have known to accomplish the goals that you really want to reach? What if I told you that there are relatively simple answers, but as yet undiscovered to many people… answers that can make significant differences in their lives. Those who make the discovery for themselves with your help will even thank you that you took the time to think about them.
One way or another, you’re about to enter a new chapter of your life that may make only modest improvements for you… or you could find new solutions that are so life-changing that you’ll one day look back with gratitude that something so simple could finally dawn on you in such a way that you are now able to even multiply your discovery by helping many others who follow your steps.

with uncertain economic times
You MUST have MULTIPLE Streams of Income
to be financially secure. And that advice is more
important than EVER in today’s economic climate!
Today’s world is filled with all sorts of deception. Sharp discernment is required for those who really want to discover the things that are true. If we don’t want truth we won’t search for it. That’s why we need to be discerning. That takes a special level of heart and acuity to be able to do that in an honest way.
2 Timothy 4:3-4 says, “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires…”
How far does that spread? It’s in every sector of society, isn’t it? It’s in education. It’s in religion. It’s in the business world. It’s in politics. They will find teachers according to their own desires. It’s natural to the human condition, isn’t it? We want to hear what we want to hear and we don’t want to hear anything that we don’t want to hear. So Paul goes on to forecast in the letter to Timothy what to expect: “…and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths.”
You may wonder: “Why would people believe in a myth?” Yet, it is so common today that many people will treat you as sort of an outcast if you don’t believe in their popular myths.
What are some myths that dominate the landscape of our world today?
Evolution, Universalism, Socialism…
What could be more of a myth than the idea of evolutionism – that everything ultimately came from nothing with no designer? Yet people believe it. It’s a commonly held myth. And, of course, very intellectual scientists get behind it, those whose hearts are darkened. They do not desire to have discernment to know what is true.
I make no apology about this. Think. It goes for other areas of human thinking and understanding.
Think about universalism. That’s the idea that everyone will eventually get to heaven no matter how evil and hateful to God they are. They wrongly think that God certainly can’t be unforgiving to everyone so all must be acceptable to God. Think. God is forgiving to those who humbly acknowledge their utter lost condition and their need for His mercy. God does forgive them. He’s just not going to force them to turn to Him in their need.
Socialism – there’s another myth – the idea that we can all have everything, even if none of us do anything. Let’s face it. That doesn’t work, does it?
So here we have these dominant myths in our society today.
First is Mother Nature – that’s the primary icon for evolution. It just happened by itself.
Next is Universalism – God is too loving to send good people to hell.
And the inevitable outcome of the first two is the promotion of socialism. The socialistic state will take care of you.
They are all frauds.
The basic Biblical Principle Needing our attention?
God created man to thrive in the world that God made by working to make it into something – using his God-given creativity, ingenuity and initiative to make it more than it started out.
God is the one who orchestrates the entire universe from the very beginning. He is the one who created it all. He is the one who created man. He is the One who gave man initiative, creativity, abilities and skills. God is the awesome genius Who gives us all that is needed to achieve the purpose He has designed. And we do it by work.
Work isn’t a curse. God gave man work to do in the garden before the curse.
When people come into our Bible-believing churches with compromised views, how should we encourage them to evaluate the truths of the Bible?
Do you really believe that we should prove all things? That’s a good way to start a conversation with anyone. It’s a simple way to get them thinking about God and His purposes for all of us. And use the basic qualifying question if you find they are open.
The Basic Qualifying Question
What is the basic qualifying question to help people you encounter to open their minds and discover what’s true? It’s simply this: “If I could… would you?”
“If I could show you something…” “…give you some insight that I’ve learned…” “…help you in some of those areas…” “If I could give you some new ways of understanding… Would you?”
Would you be open to have a discussion to talk about it with me some more? Would you entertain reading a book about it? Would you look at some new ideas that I discovered personally?
You might want to ask: “Would it be meaningful to you if…?” If what? If I could show you some things that give you a new slant that you didn’t know before.
You don’t know what you don’t know
One of the most basic principles of education is this idea that none of us knows what we don’t know. Would you agree?
So, asking questions, like I just did, is a good way to open the door to one’s reason, right? It’s the basic qualifying question.
Do you want to order your life by the truth? How do you establish what is true?
Is it true that the truth shall set you free?
Watch out here. You’ll want to look at John 8:31-32. Does the truth set you free? You may know many people with access to libraries full of books that contain the truth. They may have stacks of Bibles in their home. They may have even memorized a lot of scripture. Does that mean they are free? Are they necessarily free just because they know the truth? Be sure you get the context of Jesus’ words here. Jesus said it plainly in the opening statement here when He said, “If you abide in my word, then you are truly my disciples.” Two things are happening here: abiding in my word and being true disciples of Jesus. Then, the result is that you will know the truth and the truth shall set you free. Freedom, because of the truth that it brings, is a direct result of living in – abiding in – the words of Jesus by following and being a disciple of Jesus. It’s all about Him and letting Him exercise His dominion in our life.. His wisdom in our life.. His insight.. His discernment… in our life.
Regardless of the anxiety about the economic future of America, compared to all the rest of the world, it’s clear that 90% of American citizens are wealthy. Here is an area we need to delve into regarding common myths. Unfortunately, many don’t seem to realize that we are wealthy. We can capitalize on it even for our own sakes, let alone for God’s sake and the sake of others. God has blessed our land in amazing ways unlike anything that has ever happened in history. So what else are we faced to understand?
With riches come more opportunity and more responsibility.
The myth is that we achieved all this abundance because of our own goodness or skill. Really? Some believe in the myth that we were just lucky, and if it happens to go away we have no solution. Just panic and hope for a new stroke of good luck.
Who is the Owner of this world anyway?
God owns all the cattle on a thousand hills. He owns all the silver and all the gold.
“The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof.” Psalm 24:1
It all belongs to God. Do you think He’s short of any resources?
Paul wrote to Timothy to “Instruct those who are rich in this present world not to be conceited or to fix their hope on the uncertainty of riches (that would be practically all of us in America today), but on God, who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy.” God wants us to focus on Him – not on the riches – but on Him. He’s the One Who supplies all the things we enjoy and we are indeed ‘rich’ in this country no matter how little or how much we make, earn or create. He goes on to say: “Instruct them to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is life indeed” (1 Timothy 6:17-19).
Politicians and the media seem determined to incite us about economic downturns on a national or even a global level, but what about your own economy? The average annual income for many people in nations of the world is about $300. Would you say that we are all doing a lot better than that? So what are we doing with our own economy? Are we looking to God to instruct us, to guide us, and to trust Him every step of the way?
What many people seem to miss is that financial security (what we regard as true economic prosperity) is more than a fat bank account. Money seems to ‘take wings.’ But prosperity is more about opportunity. It’s about diligence and practicing good principles of personal relationship development. It’s about bringing value to others who reward you for what you do. These are things that put you in position to have the security of ongoing income, ongoing earnings, ongoing financial security.
So what are some practical things we can do to face the challenges of economic lack?
If you are facing serious economic struggles, consider a few things that can make a huge difference.
- Determine to be persistent at moving forward – that’s initiative.
- List your goals. Write down what you want. Talk with your close relations about what you want.
- List your assets, skills, things you’re passionate about, things that you feel are a mission on your heart and life, training, aptitudes. What do others say you’re good at? What new course could help you discover how to better use those assets?
- Find a work that you love. Pursue it, even if you have to volunteer on your off hours to do it.
- Find a way to help other people get what they want. This develops amazingly into opportunities and connections with other people who can open doors that you never dreamed of. Volunteering with like-minded people can lead to all sorts of opportunities.
- Find a way to monetize both (what you love and what others want).
- Find a sideline home business you can believe in and a training coach you can trust to tell you the truth. Find someone who can mentor you. Be sure you’ve checked out the success factors that avoid unnecessary risk and disappointment. Often we get blown off course because we lack a trustworthy mentor. But there are people out there who are waiting for you to ask them for guidance, for insight, for consultation. Seek out those people. And if you’re not hanging out where you can meet the kinds of people you want to mentor you, then maybe you need to change where you hang out.
- Get good at doing something that people respect you for and generate fulfillment in you. If you are feeling that you’re making a genuine contribution into the lives of others, their appreciation will keep you motivated to keep working on improving your skills and your performance. Hang out with others with similar aptitudes and goals. Attend events they attend. Get engaged with seminars to learn more about the business you’re considering or you’ve decided to pursue. Whether it’s your primary career or something you want to develop on the side, give it your best effort.
- In today’s world, it’s imperative to diversify your skills. For most people it’s now evident that your primary career is not going to be your only source for all the needs of your life and your retirement in the future. You have multiple interests. Give several of them your time. Maybe you like music, or writing, or broadcasting. So be willing to re-educate yourself as times and technologies change.
- Never stop learning. Be open minded to new ideas. One of the leading factors that sets highly successful people apart from the rest of the herd in society is that they are always eager to learn. They are curious about the world around them and how to apply their efforts to make that world better, even when it involves information outside their primary career.
- Invest in your self-improvement. Spend money on practical education as well as academic schooling. Learn the Success Principles in the book by Jack Canfield. It’s a classic everyone will enjoy.
- Change your social environment if you’re not with the people who are going where you want to go. Invest effort in making new friends. Attend conferences where you can grow your skills.
- Consider carefully the values of the pursuits you take up. Be true to yourself and your values.
- Decide to make money your servant and develop your business in such a way to prosper others as a result of your activities. Money is just a tool to help others.
- Determine to find allies who are as passionate as you are to reach goals together and work with them.
In today’s changing world, we all need to find the opportunities and the people who are serious about working together to reach worthwhile goals. We have ambitious goals to help people reclaim their legacy through the discovery of truths that help them establish the five important pillars of ‘legacy’ that we’ve talked about repeatedly on this program.

Like a lot of things in life, the teacher appears when the student is ready.
Just make sure that you know your own values and goals so that the choices you make are in harmony with them.
Be encouraged by Ephesians 2:10 that tells us that we are “created for good works.” Let’s be sure to walk in them.
In Ephesians 4:15, as we “grow up in all things,” let’s be sure to speak the truth in love, not walking in the futility of our mind, but laying aside falsehoods (myths) while laboring with our own abilities to do what is good so we can have resources to share with those in need.
Opportunity abounds no matter how bad the economy looks. You’ve got your own economy. Decide to use your abilities to develop it.
Remind yourself of Philippians 2:13: “God is at work in you, both to will and to do of His good pleasure.”
Philippians 1:9-10 “in love, develop real knowledge and discernment, so you can approve the things that are excellent.”
What you’ve heard today is worth learning well. I trust it will be an investment to return an exceptional reward.
Do you want to make one of the most important decisions that can positively change your life starting today? Could this make more of a difference in your future than almost anything else you can do?
I’m completely convinced that many of us and those around us are far more capable of being much more productive, more influential and happier than they ever dreamed. Is it possible that just one word can ignite a beacon-light of hope for you today? Is there a word that can make a 180 degree change in your future?
Just to rattle your cage a little, let me ask you something. Do you want to completely sabotage your life, destroy your potential, and ultimately look back on a life of wasted years with intense regret? Of course you don’t. No one WANTS that. But for many people, their actions — and more importantly their attitude — are leading them down a road of self-destruction that will ultimately lead them to such an undesirable final destination.
That road’s name is “I Can’t Boulevard” and it’s full of millions upon millions of unsuccessful, complacent, and mediocrity-filled men and women.
Yes, many of these people are also good-hearted and well-meaning, but unfortunately they’re stuck in a big fat rut with their health, their body, their income, their marriage, their career, or their relationships. They are stuck because their attitude is so affected by the phrase, “I can’t”.
Have you ever heard self-defeating statements like:
I can’t achieve a body like that. I don’t have the genetics.
I can’t make a six figure salary. What skills do I have?
I can’t fix my marriage. It’s too far gone.
I can’t be an entrepreneur. That’s too risky.
I can’t be forgiven by God. I’ve done too many bad things.
This negative “can’t do” mentality is holding them back.
As employees, when a problem arises, they’d rather tell you about every potential solution that WON’T work instead of spending their time focusing on finding the one solution that will work.
Whine. Complain. Negative thoughts. Negative words. Negative action.
Fact is, when it all boils down, how you handle the problems and obstacles that arise in your life will determine whether you excel and soar like an eagle, or if you remain grounded in a chicken coop full of other self-limiting thinkers.
You see, problems and obstacles are OPPORTUNITIES for leaders. Are you a leader? You can be a leader, if you learn to RESPOND like a leader.
Leaders fix problems. Leaders learn from problems. Leaders grow from problems. Leaders become BETTER LEADERS because of problems.
Will you chose excuse making or leading yourself to victory?
Other folks, however, let problems and obstacles consume them, control them, and serve as the fuel for rationalizing their many excuses.
“I can’t eat healthy while traveling. It’s too hard.”
Yes you can. FIGURE. IT. OUT. Thousands of people do it (while hundreds of thousands don’t). What separates the few from the many? Simple. You can’t just “wing it” and hope it all goes well. Of course, if you do that, you’re going to fail. You have to have a plan – a plan for success – and you need to map it out in advance. Know where you’ll be and when you’ll be there. Create options for success. Creating a plan is creating a blueprint to solve your problems.
“My spouse and I can’t get along. My marriage is going down the tubes.”
Start with yourself and change the things about YOU that cause your spouse to react negatively to you. If you deal with the needs of your spouse, you will automatically have a much happier relationship and in turn you’ll find that conflict becomes less frequent. But, that’ll never happen as long as you’re pointing fingers in any direction other than back at yourself. Before long, once they see your changes, your spouse will also want to change to please you. Why? Because the relationship now becomes one of meeting each other’s needs again. Isn’t that the way it once was? I guess most relationships begin in a place of mutual admiration don’t they? The first step begins with you; your spouse will follow.
“I can’t have a successful business. I wouldn’t even know where to start.”
FIND OUT WHERE TO START. What does that even mean? Do you think anyone who has a successful business magically knew where to start? No, they didn’t. Talk to people who have done what you want to do. Hire a coach. Get the support you need to succeed. OR, just stop being negative long enough to do a little research on your own. That’s where you start. (more…)

What Type of Business Is Best for You Today?
Note: Do you think being financially free and clear is a worthy goal? Are you going to remain unduly dependent on people and systems outside your control for your financial needs? Would you rather have the liberty to successfully achieve enough wealth so you can help others? Remember that “wealth” is relative. Do you have 2 cents in your pocket? Then your wealth is worth what 2 cents will buy. We all must answer this: “Are we making choices that limit our wealth or that enhance our ability to improve our wealth so that we can be a blessing to our families and to others?” dennis.petersen
Mark’s Background in Business
I have worked in various business types through my life. In my teens, I sold Fuller Brush products. In college, I sub-contracted in building homes. I worked as a carpenter for several years, then built properties which I rented and, after many years, sold. I explored the stock and futures markets for several years. I read over 50 books on the subject and personally experimented. I established two print shops, and currently oversee one. I have explored more than 45 network marketing companies, trying about twelve. I built down-lines in four, with over 2000 enrollees. During all that, I have also worked as a pastor for about 25 years, founded a church, taught in a church-centered Bible school, and traveled world-wide full-time during the last five years teaching the Church how to hear the voice of God. So I have had a life full of many types of activities, all of which have been rewarding and growing experiences.
There are 4 ways of establishing financial independence
by creating and releasing wealth through your actions.
Financial independence – defined – “having your needs met with plenty to lend and give, and receiving this income whether you are daily engaged in your business/ministry, or in activities of ministry somewhere else.”
|Topic||Working as an Employee||Own a successful Small Business||Own a successful Franchise business||Operate successfully in a Network Marketing business|
|Average start up costs||Zero||$80,000||$80,000 – $800,000||$50 – $500|
|Average hours worked per week||45||80||80||15 – 25|
|Weekly income||$200 – $700||$500 – $1500 after a 3-year start-up||$500 – $2000 after a 3-year start-up||$500 – $5000 after a 3-year start-up|
|Needed to succeed||Show up and perform your job well with a good attitude||Multiple skills, money and good mentors (9 of 10 fail within 4 years)||Multiple skills, money & good mentors (Success almost guaranteed because you are buying good mentors)||An outstanding company, multiple skills, good mentors (9 of 10 fail)|
|Job security||Uncertain||Quite certain(after 4 years)||Quite certain (after good training)||Quite certain|
|Chances you can retire financially independent?||Depends on the job||Quite good||Quite good||Quite good|
|Coachability required to succeed||Moderate||Moderate||Quite high||Extremely high|
[Note: the numbers above may have changed since this was written but the ratio comparisons between the different choices are still relatively the same… dennis.petersen]
From the above chart, it is clear that we will rarely achieve financial independence by simply working as an employee. Basically, we will only earn enough to survive. That is not a fulfillment of God’s will for us to be lending and not borrowing. Therefore I feel Christians must reach for more than just gainful employment. We should be stretching for the rest of what God wants us to become.
Let’s look at the possibility of beginning our own businesses. The Small Business Administration in the U.S. says that the average small business costs $80,000 to set up. These costs are out of the reach of many people, as is the $80,000 to $800,000 to purchase a franchise.
So the only workable possibility for creating wealth for many people will be to become involved in network marketing. You can start for $50 to $500 and operate out of your home. Your risk is small, and, generally, about 90% of it is refundable if you just can’t make it go. You do not need an office or employees or payroll taxes, nor do you need to set yourself up as a corporation. In addition, there are many tax benefits to operating a small business from your home. We recommend a whole book in this area at the close of this chapter.
[Note: There are primary reasons why people are stuck in the rat-race. One is the difference between what people with different mindsets buy on ‘payday.’ Can you imagine just what the poor, the middle class and the wealthy buy on payday? For a short video breakdown of the differences between them, check what Tim Sales has done at: http://firstclassmlmtools.com/portfolio-item/what-the-wealthy-buy-on-payday … dennis.petersen]
From Shopping Malls to Network Marketing
Shopping malls were the business boom of the ‘60s. Network marketing was the business boom of the ‘90s. Although network marketing (also called multi-level marketing and consumer direct marketing) has been around for more than 50 years, it virtually exploded in the ‘90s. Currently over $100 billion of product is moved annually by network marketing.
Why are Network Marketing Companies flourishing in general?
There are several reasons why the ‘90s was the decade for explosive network marketing growth. Society is finally ready for a marketing system that markets and delivers directly through and to consumers. Delivery services make the shipping of packages simple, fast, and effective. Toll free numbers are easily and freely installed, and can operate right on top of any existing phone line in your home, letting your home line double as a business line, also. Computer tracking of down-lines removes all the paperwork previously associated with network marketing. People are more ready to shop from home than ever before. “Cocooning” is one word being used to describe the mood. People enjoy the hassle-free aspects of home shopping, with no busy or snowy highways, no standing in long checkout lines. Placing an order on a toll free line in one or two minutes replaces all this unpleasantness, and the product is at your door in two to four days.
The downsizing of major corporations has thrown multitudes of people out of work and shown the nation that there is no job security in corporate America. Over 3.8 million executives, administrators, and managers lost their jobs in the 1980s. Each day in the 1990s, 2650 people lost their jobs. There is no longer job security in working for someone else.
People are looking for freedom, independence, the chance to be their own boss, to have control over their own lives and schedules, and to determine how much free time they will have. Many are unhappy in their current work and do not like the bosses for whom they are forced to work. Network marketing offers a way out of this entire rat race, and once again lets them be in control of their lives.
Note: Despite the misconceptions of many about home-based networking types of businesses, the truth is that those who stay committed to persistent and regular activity in a proven and legitimate business enjoy significant benefits that many people are not aware of. The challenge is to find the right business that fits for you. dennis.petersen
As a network marketer, you have a one-minute commute to work, can usually work in comfortable clothes, and have a better ability to obtain financial freedom. The average home-based business household earns $50,250 a year. This is almost double the $26,000 annual salary the average U.S. employee makes. About 20 percent of all home business households earn in excess of $75,000 a year. Over 30 million businesses are listed as home-based businesses in the U.S. That is approximately 44% of all U.S. households.
The home-based business allows you the opportunity to miss the “Three Cs” of big city life: crime, congestion, and corporate stagnation. Of those who work at home, 98% say they are happier, 96% would recommend working at home, and 88% would never return to the corporate world.
The top five positive effects of working from home are listed as:
1) feeling more relaxed,
2) having a healthier diet,
3) taking more time off,
4) exercising more often, and
5) having a better marriage and sex life.
Fifteen years ago, Alvin Toffler looked at the future in his book, The Third Wave. “The most striking change in the Third Wave Civilization,” Toffler wrote, “will probably be the shift of work from office and factory back home.”
Integrity, Diversity and Profitability that cannot be found in other business endeavors
Because of competition between network marketing companies, current companies offer many more services to their distributors and customers than ever before. The integrity of the network marketing industry is growing at a rapid pace. For example, one of the companies I work in has been in Inc. 500 (which lists the 500 fastest growing privately held companies in the U.S.) for five years in a row. And, it has received an “A” financial rating all five years. This is the highest financial rating a company can receive, and only a handful of other companies in the history of Inc. 500 have received it for five consecutive years. Talk about network marketing companies hitting the TOP! Another company I work in went from $0 to $100 million in sales in its first twelve months of existence and from 0 to 120,000 associates in its first two years! This has never happened before.
Note: The truest indicator of integrity for any company is a combination of the company’s sustained long-term success in the marketplace along with its public recognition by trusted institutions and non-compensated endorsers of the company’s business manners. Since most companies go out of business within five years, it is risky to put your heart and soul into building a business with a company just because of your satisfaction with a product. The choices made by the company with regard to people in management and how they use their profits will determine whether or not they stay in business and outlive the enthusiasm of starting up. dennis.petersen
By the end of the 1990s, network marketing became the marketing revolution of the decade. The person who sees this marketing shift continuing to take place, carefully researches the various companies, and participates in the very best, will be in an outstanding financial position by the time he works his company consistently for three years.
The rewards for Believers who are perceptive, discerning and diligent to study
I believe part of being a prophetic individual is that you are able to sense shifts in the winds which blow across the earth. I believe there is a wind blowing which represents a massive shift in the way we purchase our goods. If this is indeed true, the Church (which is people like you and me) has an outstanding opportunity to demonstrate its prophetic nature by sensing this change in marketing approaches and being on the forefront of it. The fruit will be that they reap the financial spoils that come to those who lead in taking the land of business back for the Lord.
Network Marketing — the Optimum Business Opportunity
Let’s review again the reasons network marketing is such an outstanding vehicle for achieving financial freedom.
- Minimal capital required for start-up.
- No employees. This means no hiring, firing, workman’s comp., etc.
- Limited paperwork because the company’s computer handles all sales volumes and commissions due.
- Low overhead because you work out of your home.
- You have immediate, unlimited income potential.
- You have a flexible schedule. You choose where and when you will work.
- You have no territorial restrictions. You generally have access to several nations. You can actually vacation in various nations of the world and build your company while on vacation.
- You have many tax benefits since you are self-employed (even if you are also employed by another company).
- You feel independent because you have no boss. Everyone on your team works together towards everyone’s success.
- It offers an exciting and challenging career and a chance for personal growth and development.
A Couple of Questions to Ask Yourself
Note: If you are willing to be honest with yourself then that is the beginning of transformation. It might take some willingness to change your priorities, to commit to a new learning curve or find new friends willing to help you improve yourself, but the results will undoubtedly be life-changing. dennis.petersen
Are you financially free today? Are you able to lend and not borrow? Are you able to create and release money for the Kingdom of God? Are you doing exactly what you enjoy doing? Are you free to spend all the time with your family you desire? Are you able to spend all the time in ministry that you desire?
If you are not happy with your answers, what are you going to do about it? If you continue to do the same things you have been doing in the past, you will continue to reap the exact same results you are experiencing today. One definition of insanity is to do the same thing you have always done and hope for different results.
If you are not totally satisfied with your answers, you need to begin doing different things so you can get different results. If you are not willing to make this step, you will always struggle with unfulfilled dreams and hopes and will not live to fulfill the destiny God has given to you. Please do not let this happen to you. Please take the steps necessary to change your life today. It is your life. You are the one who has to live it. It might just as well be full to overflowing, rather than encumbered with limitations that God never intended for His Church to bear.
About 95% of Americans retire with limited incomes and no financial freedom. This need not be in the richest nation in the world. If you become one of these 95% it will have been your choice. I pray that instead you choose to become wealthy enough so that you can freely lend and not borrow. In future chapters, I will show how you can do this.
Thought: If you do what 95% of the people you know are doing, you will get the same results that these 95% are getting. You must choose to do what the 5% are doing.
God spoke the following prophetically in our midst:
“People have dealt with business; churches have dealt with business; ministries have dealt with business; now, I, the Lord, shall deal with them through business. Sound the trumpet call. The ground that was called business shall now be Mine and My enemies shall surrender and My adversaries retreat, and the spoils of battle shall be divided among the victors as a trophy of their inheritance.”
In the next chapter we will explore ingredients to look for in an outstanding network marketing company.
Note: Does God want you to have wealth? Whether you think the answer is yes or no, the question becomes clearer when we acknowledge who owns the wealth of this world in the first place. Psalm 24:1 says “the earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof.” It all belongs to God anyway. Jesus said in the parable of the “minas” that “a certain nobleman went to a distant country to receive a kingdom for himself, and then return.” He then tells of distributing the management of his wealth to different servants who were accountable to make it prosper. Here is a profound Biblical truth. Why does God give his people the power to make wealth? Deuteronomy 8:18 says “that he may confirm His covenant.” Has God given Christ’s true followers a “better covenant?” Is it also being “confirmed” (verified and proven) by prospering the “works of your hands” as described in the Bible? What is the promised result of God’s wisdom? Proverbs 8:18 says that part of the result of God’s wisdom being exercised in one’s life is “Riches, honor and enduring wealth.” You don’t need wealth in heaven. And there is a difference between mere “riches” (or money that disappears rather fast) and “enduring wealth” that keeps on returning an economic blessing (like a prosperous business or the recurring seasonal produce of a piece of farmland). As you take charge of your own financial destiny under God’s sovereign authority as His “Steward” then you can look forward to meeting your own needs and planting the overflow of your efforts into things that will expand the kingdom of God by doing the ‘works’ of empowering or assisting others. dennis.petersen
What about investing?
In this book, I have not addressed the issue of investing, through which many have acquired wealth. One book which lays out a number of sound principles concerning investing is entitled The Wealthy Barber by David Chilton, published by Stoddart Publishing in Toronto, Canada. If interested in investing, you may want to read it. A few of his principles follow.
- Don’t invest in any mutual fund that does not have a 10-year consistent success record of a high rate of return (perhaps 15-25 percent every year).
- Make sure the same man is overseeing the fund who has overseen it for the last 10 (profitable) years. When he retires, withdraw your money, because you have no idea if the new manager has any expertise.
These two simple rules will put you on pretty good footing if you choose to invest.

Think and Discuss
- What are the four ways of establishing financial freedom? Which ones have you tried? How well have they worked? What would you have to do differently in the future to achieve your financial destiny?
- Why is society ready for network marketing in the 21st century? Do you agree with these reasons? Do you think there is a shift toward network marketing in our society in the current decade such as there was in the ‘60s toward shopping malls? Why or why not?
- Are you currently financially independent? Are you in the position where you can lend and not borrow? Are you able to spend all the time with your family and in ministry that you desire? Will you be able to retire financially independent? If not, are you willing to make whatever changes are necessary to get satisfactory answers to these questions?
- What are the blocks that would keep you from making the necessary changes? How can these be overcome? Will you overcome them by the power of the Holy Spirit?

Satisfying your own desire ultimately comes down to helping others reach their goals.
“Give, and it will be given to you. They will *pour into your lap a good measure—pressed down, shaken together and running over. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return.” Luke 6:38
The ‘golden rule’ preached by Jesus is commonly known as “do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Right? So what is the ‘platinum rule?’
Well, what if the other person isn’t interested in what would make you happy? Doing what you like for them might be a complete waste of time. How are you going to find out about how to treat them?
Whose goals govern your actions?
When you decide what you want – what your goal is – your next step is to find out who you can help in reaching their goals. Their goals might compliment your goals or they might not do a thing for your goals. All that matters is that you selflessly grasp the eternal principle that is built by design into this universe: the key to accomplishing your desire is to find others to help in reaching their desires.
Remember the universal law of sowing and reaping?
“Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap.” Galatians 6:7
Imagine sowing helpful and empowering insights and strengths into the lives of others without primarily thinking, “What’s in it for me?” Yes, I know, we are all wired to think about ourselves all the time. Just watch a child for awhile. Listen to ‘em whine about getting their way. How many full grown adults live in a constant state of thinking about themselves, about their needs, their worries, their priorities… without much thought about others at all?
“Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.” Philippians 2:4
Imagine how refreshing it would be to be surrounded by people who really think like that and live that way.
How would you like to work for a company where that is the resounding mission that resonates from every coworker? How would you like to have a church family where that is the conviction of every leader and every parishioner? How would you like a community where that is the code of ethics practiced by all your neighbors? How would you like a family where that is the lifestyle from morning until bedtime? How would you like to be the embodiment of that concept and begin a complete reformation of your culture? Imagine… thoughtfully and intentionally helping people reach their goals. What a relationship-building concept. And it all starts with you.
“And the LORD will continually guide you, and satisfy your desire in scorched places, and give strength to your bones; and you will be like a watered garden, And like a spring of water whose waters do not fail.” Isaiah 58:11
Sounds like a pretty good result doesn’t it? Who wouldn’t want that for themselves? So, how does this manifest? Check out the verse immediately preceding that promise. Like most promises from God, there is a condition… it starts with the little word “if.”
“And if you give yourself to the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then your light will rise in darkness and your gloom will become like midday.” Isaiah 58:10
But a charitable attitude is something you can have toward not only destitute people. Why not have that attitude toward those we interact with on a daily basis?
“So then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual up building.” Romans 14:19
Sowing and reaping
It’s as obvious as any law of nature that serves to guide our own actions in almost every area of life we can think about. As we sow, so then shall we also reap. That’s something you can truly have faith in because the Creator built it into the fabric of our experience. It’s an unchangeable law decreed in heaven. It guarantees that for every deliberate human effort we will receive a multiple reward. For each handful of seeds planted, a bushel is reaped. For every good idea shared with another, many more ideas will be given to us in return. For every loving act of helpfulness, a life of love is harvested in return, and that translates into a life full of legacy.
Giving to the poor has certain results.
“You shall generously give to him (the poor), and your heart shall not be grieved when you give to him, because for this thing the LORD your God will bless you in all your work and in all your undertakings.” Deuteronomy 15:10
Have you seen God’s promises to bless the “work of your hands?”
The work of your hands is the substance from which the Lord generates his blessing of increase. And it’s not just about what you produce mechanically with your manual labor. It is the promise for your productivity, your creativity, your profitability, your increase in wealth, your increase in the ability to provide for your needs and the needs of others.
“The LORD will command the blessing upon you in your barns and in all that you put your hand to, and He will bless you in the land which the LORD your God gives you.” Deuteronomy 28:8
The outcome of tending to YOUR business?
“…make it your ambition to lead a quiet life and attend to your own business and work with your hands, just as we commanded you, so that you will behave properly toward outsiders and not be in any need.” 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12
“In all labor there is profit, But mere talk leads only to poverty.” Proverbs 14:23
We all face a major challenge today.
Will we commit our ambition to grow up and stand up to learn how to positively overcome the challenges of a changing world or will we allow ourselves to be beaten and depressed into a state of complaining and bitterness as a victim of circumstances? (more…)
Whose Lives Can You Influence With Positive Benefits? Who Are the People You Want To Talk To?
Who Are the Ones Most Open Minded To What You Have To Share With Them?
To everyone who absolutely loves to help other people,
Unless you love ‘beating your head against the wall’ and constantly feeling like you are in the business of ‘convincing’ people against their will, you must finally come to grips with the fact that there are really only a minority of the people out there who are even interested in hearing what you have to say. Who are they? You can find them easily because their mind is actually working— and working in their favor.. It kind of reminds you of a parachute… It only works when it’s open! It’s the open-minded people who are actually willing to discover something that they don’t know and are willing to really admit that they don’t know what they don’t know.
Do you want to know how to spot those who are open-minded?
Open-minded people are constantly excited about their personal discovery of new things. But more importantly, they’re eager for developing their life. They’re serious about improving their health. And they truly want to be better stewards of their resources. They’re not afraid to be ACTIVE receivers of the blessing of the Apostle John’s wish where he said, “Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers.” (3 John 2).
How can a person honestly say they want to receive the goal of that prayer IF they’re unwilling to do their part to adjust their attitudes and behaviors that will enable the desired result to manifest in their own life?
Have you noticed that our society has unfortunately promoted a rather negative and cynical attitude that easily rubs off on many people who are inclined to be more pessimistic than optimistic?
Now I realize that you have to try your best to get along with everybody. But does that mean you have to ‘spin your wheels’ wasting much of your energy and time with people who really don’t want to better themselves?
There’s an important lesson we need to learn from the Master Teacher, Jesus Christ, who said that you need to “shake the dust off your feet” and move on. Imagine that. Even when you’ve got the most life-changing and positive message to give someone, if they don’t receive what you have to say, pack up and find someone who is OPEN. There’s a reason it says “the humble shall inherit the land and delight in abundant prosperity” – the humble one is the one who knows he doesn’t know it all and is open to hear what you have to say – explore undiscovered realms of life-building insights.
It isn’t a bad idea to start out a conversation with someone and ‘take their temperature’ to see if you’re going to have a short conversation or if they’re someone who you might want to dive a little deeper with. Try something like: “Hey, I thought of you and wondered if you’re open to see what I’ve been discovering lately.” If they respond with cynicism, sarcasm or condescension, just tell them, “Oh, that’s okay, did you hear the weather forecast for next week?” and move on to other topics. Don’t even try to engage their mind. It’s not working anyway! Remember the parachute?
On the bright side, don’t let their pessimism wear you down. Be encouraged with the hope that there really are a lot of people out there who are plenty happy to hear what you have to share with them. Start asking questions that reflect your honest care for people. Ask them what would make them happier than they are right now. Ask them if they’re open to a new idea. Ask them if they’d like to make a difference in the lives of those they themselves care about. Ask them if they have taken the course you just learned about on how to …be healthier, …save more of their hard earned money, or …leverage their time to get more done and have more time to do the things they like to do.
With some people, if you’re brave, you might even be able to ask them something like this: “You wanna know what I learned about people that are open? … Turns out that they are the same people who like to better themselves, improve their health and make more money so they can do more good in the world!” Then you could follow up with another question like, “Can you think of anybody who thinks like that?” … and laugh with them if they seem to be good natured enough to engage with you.
You might think that everybody wants to solve their problems and find solutions for the things that cause them pain in their life. But if they really did want that – solutions for their problems – then why aren’t they actively pursuing it? Sometimes we have to rekindle the hope, inspire the optimism and rebuild the curiosity that makes people want to discover new things. Just be careful not to ‘cast your pearls before swine’ if you know what I mean. For an energetic young optimist, that’s one of life’s hardest lessons to learn. The only ones you can help… really help… are those who really want to be helped. You ‘gotta wanna’ have the results bad enough to exercise some initiative to get what you want. And if a person doesn’t respond to you with some energy …some interest …some sincere curiosity, you must not let them drag you into an argument that goes nowhere.
So, don’t forget this one. It’ll save you a lot of wasted time and energy. Test the waters. Ask some good questions to see if they’re open. Don’t be afraid to taunt them a little bit if you have a good rapport with them. But don’t ‘show your hand’ too soon. See if they’re ready to activate their mind. And when you’re confident that they are ready, just give them a few nibbles to see if they really want more. Make a plan with them to talk again later and see if you have something that really can help them. Let the curiosity factor ‘work’ on their subconscious. That way they’ll be ready to hear you with both ears when you’re with them again.
Do you want to create additional income? You’re probably well aware that there are many people like yourself who are seeking the same thing. There are many options available but basically four different kinds of business models, each having its own set of pros and cons. Conventional employers offer commissions or wages and small private businesses typically are all based on exchanging your time for ‘transactional’ revenue. Neither of those allows much chance for you to ‘leverage’ or ‘scale’ your business. Franchise ownership typically requires substantial cash investments and expertise that most people do not have. That leaves a host of business opportunities that are very popular offering independent status as a ‘representative’ or ‘agent’ under the broad category of ‘marketing’ and requiring some degree of team building and leadership.
There are many questionable and unrealistic opportunities being pitched at people these days. One of your first priorities should be to work with a team that has carefully investigated many of the various business models that are out there. You should have a clear ‘roadmap’ to find and work with a successful business that brings proven value to the marketplace, fits one of your areas of interest and has developed a proven program for on the job training so you can earn income while you learn the strategies for succeeding at your business.
Biblical principles of ethics and unquestionable integrity are absolutely imperative for you and anyone you would choose to work with. And it’s only realistic to accept the fact that everybody has different interests and skills that will guide them to the enterprise that works best for them. That’s why I work at helping people embrace the concept of “diversifying” their approach to producing income, much like a farmer reflects the Wisdom of Solomon in Ecclesiastes 11:1-6 (Read it when you get a chance).
In my experience and after researching dozens of different types of home businesses for myself, it’s clear that everyone wants to avoid a wild goose chase. There are some key success factors that are critical for long term success. Every one of these factors is just as important as the next.
Here’s a good question to ask any serious business person:
“Do you agree that the ideal business is one that keeps customers coming back and that does not require your personal handling of all future transactions?”
That’s what creates ongoing ‘passive’ income, right?
Many people are familiar with the “80 – 20 rule.” You know what that is I’m sure. 20% of the people (or less) create 80% of the success or results in just about anything. A good question to ask is:
“What if you could have a business where even the 80% (of people who are your customers and business partners) are so delighted with their participation with you that they count their success, even as customers using your products, as adequate reason to continue doing business with you?”
When it’s appropriate to talk with a business person about the search that many people are doing right now to find a reliable business opportunity, they will appreciate having this list of Success Factors. The logical question to ask next, after a thoughtful review of these 12 points, is my question at the end.
1. Company track record –
How long has the company you’re considering representing been in business? What are the company’s annual sales statistics each year since they began their business? Does the company print average income statistics for business builders? It should and you should ask for them. Proof of long term sales, success and growth is critical in choosing any business.
2. Financially sound –
Does the company have outstanding debt? Joining a company that is debt free is something I highly recommend to lessen any risk to you.
3. Strong management team –
What are the backgrounds and credentials of the management team? You want to join a company that is run with integrity and strong leadership.
4. Unique consumable products –
Are the products of the company products that people actually need, use, run out of and repurchase month after month? Do the products have any trademarks or patents allowing for exclusive rights (meaning no other company can copy them)? If the products are not consumable, meaning something that a person would only buy once, then that is a business that will not be viable long term. If the products are consumable but not necessarily a genuine need, that will reduce your chance for long term success. Products that are truly needed and consumed monthly make for a solid business model.
5. Wide market appeal –
Are the products something everyone needs and uses? If the products are specific for a certain gender, age group or body size for example, you reduce your market potential. It is not something for everyone. If you choose a narrow niche product, you must ask yourself if you are comfortable excluding customers that are not attracted to that niche.
6. Competitive prices –
Are the products comparable in price or less expensive than the competition? If they are too expensive this is not a business that will produce ongoing great results. What will you do when you find competitors with equally high quality products that are reputably offered for a lot less cost? You may be loyal out of sheer stubbornness but your customers will run to the competitors.
7. High customer reorder rate –
Does the company share its reorder rate? This means one thing. How many customers that purchased from the company last month, reorder again the following month? If the re-order rate is low, the business will not be viable as new customers simply replace your old customers producing no real growth or a secure, residual income. Know that it will be difficult to find this information from most companies directly. Don’t make a decision until you know this important piece of the business model you are considering joining.
8. Low initial investment –
If the cost to join or start your business is too high it makes for more risk and difficulty in attracting customers and business partners. If a start up fee is high and a ‘customer acquisition bonus’ is also high, beware of what might be a “Ponzi scheme.” Many so-called ‘ground-floor opportunities’ have attracted many hopeful participants, only to tragically end in the loss of much time and money for the vast majority of eager business partners.
9. Low monthly requirement –
If there is a high monthly requirement, customers and business builders may end up storing an inventory of products they do not need. If there is a low monthly product purchase requirement, then customers are getting what they need for personal use each month. From a business standpoint, you know customers are purchasing each month. That creates the freedom of true residual income.
10. Rewards for leadership development –
Does the company reward you for helping others in your business succeed? If there is any way the company could remove business building partners from your business because of their success, be very careful about joining. There should never be potential for you to lose great partners. Also be sure that you receive a reward for the business created by all of the customers that you personally bring to the company. There are many companies that cleverly take away productive customers and business partners from hard working people just like you.
11. Risk-free – Is everything 100% guaranteed?
If not, could you seriously advise someone to join you? Be sure the guarantee is long enough to adequately ‘test-drive’ the product. Check to see how the company handles returns and refunds. You will be so much more satisfied with your company when you can confidently tell your prospective customers that you know from personal experience about their excellent customer service and refund policy.
12. Anyone can be successful –
Is the business plan set up for anyone to be successful at any time? If it’s a company that says “Ground floor” opportunity, or “Get in Now”, be very wary. If only the people who join at the beginning can be successful, then eventually people will get hurt.
The only real question after considering this list is this:
“which one of these factors would you take off the list if you were going to seriously consider working with the company?”
If anyone seeing this list knows someone they care about is considering working with a company as an independent representative, they might be wise to consider: “how does that company measure up?” If we are honest with ourselves, nothing can match the conviction of ‘certainty’ that is backed up by verifiable data and experience. All the above points are relevant particularly to the one who has a long term commitment in mind. That’s why we should be just as eager to ‘prove all things’ in this part of life as we should be in any other.

How many people do you know who wish for a better life but never seem to do much to change it? It seems to be natural for almost everybody to desire a better life. But is their desire matched with effort to do anything about it?
No matter where we are in life we tend to at least have fleeting dreams of a better place. I suppose some would think that is a good quality, but is it really?
It might seem good to have a dream that we can see far off of a better situation for us, our families and our businesses and communities. But is this really a good mindset to maintain?
What good is a dream if it is not progressing toward reality?
A lot of people give up dreaming for this very reason… There is no progress in reality toward the dream. A dream can make you feel good, but long term, if you don’t actively pursue it and make it a reality, the dream will cause you more frustration than anything.
But there is a good reason to have hope! I’m talking about the day your life really changes…the day that your dream starts to become a reality, and not some pie-in-the-sky wish. Imagine a day that literally turns your life around for you – a day that things begin to get better and you begin to fulfill your purpose, your mission and your destiny!
When is this day?
It’s the day you make a decision! It’s the day you say “enough is enough; I’ve had it.” When will you get serious about changing your future?
The simplest key to changing your life is to make a decision, and then to act upon it. Once you start taking action and follow-through consistently until your dream becomes a reality… THAT is the day when your decision is etched on your doorpost to face you every day from now on. Life will begin to change for you.
So the decision is the key? Yes, it is. Every dream begins as a thought. What is yours? You might have to start with the reality that you were born to be a producer… to be productive… to be more than you are now by applying your desire to your circumstances and look for opportunities to make the money it takes to reach the things you dream about. Yes, that’s right… it takes money and money is yours to create as you find ways to provide value for others around you.
What’s it going to take?
But you know right well that to have the financial independence to accomplish the dreams you have is going to take more than ‘making a living.’ So why not work in your part time hours to create the means to allow you to have money working for you rather than you being a slave to money?
You may as well face the reality that to do that you have to learn to master your time and your skills so you can OWN your own business. And that doesn’t mean that you have to be a slave to a business that really ‘owns’ you. Why not find out how to take control of being a producer that is using the right tools to create wealth?
You say: “I would love to have my own business. I’d love to be free to run my life and earn as much money as I want so I can go where I want and help others as I truly want and experience a full life of being more of what I was created to accomplish. Sounds like a good dream wouldn’t you say? It’s probably a dream that a lot of people have and may be afraid to say for fear of being put down. But just because you have a little electrical impulse bouncing around inside your head, does that do you any good?
Dreams have value when you convert them to Action
The dream only has genuine value to you or others if it is translated into action! And it only takes on action if we make a decision to form a ‘blueprint’ or ‘map’ of action.
Let’s sort out a simple plan. What are the decisions to be made here? Well, one might be to quit wasting your off-work hours on activities that are not investing in your future. I’m not suggesting you quit your job. Not yet. But you do need to realize that you are in business for yourself and your job (if you are employed or if you own a small business) is part of your ‘roadmap’ to your future. Another part of your roadmap is how you decide to invest some time into building systems that will allow you to have financial freedom.
Systems Create Leverage So You Can Have Freedom
Once you have built up a profitable part time business that truly leverages your time by using proven business systems to expand your prosperity so you are producing more than just ‘a living’ then maybe you will consider quitting your job. But in the meantime, figure out how to make your expenses match the income from your job. If you are determined to eliminate the things that waste your private time and invest 10 to 20 hours a week into a proven business system with a trustworthy business team, then it won’t be long before you will create a vision for goals that can accomplish your dreams. Of course you must be coachable and self controlled with your new and increasing extra income. You will start thinking like a successful owner of “You, Inc.”
New Disciplines or Pipe Dreams – your choice
As you learn more about how to grow your business, you will discover new disciplines that produce new rewards. You will have to decide what you must do to make your dream a reality. You must make better choices of how you spend your time, who you spend your time with and what you feed your mind. Then you must act upon those decisions. If you do not act, your dream remains nothing more than a pipe dream – a non-reality.
When you have acted, you must follow through. Continue to follow your plan, day by day, moving your dream to fulfillment. Here is a practical exercise to get you moving:
- What is your dream? It could be in any area of life: Work, family, finances, health etc.
- What is a decision you have to make to get yourself MOVING in the right direction? This should be action–oriented, not philosophical in nature. For example, it should be “I am going to invest the time and resources needed to start my new business on March 1st,” not “I’ve decided that being in business for myself would be more fulfilling.” That is an idea, not a decision.
- Next, pick a day you are going to do it. Pick a time. Be specific.
- Next, do it! Commit to your business mentor that you will do what it takes and stay accountable.
- Next, begin the process of continually following through.
- Next, enjoy yourself; you are pursuing your dream! It may be hard, but it will also be the most fulfilling and rewarding time of your life!
“The history of free men is not written by chance, but by choice; their choice.” Dwight D. Eisenhower
Decide, act and follow through. The day you do will be the day you change your life for good!
